Madikeri: A.K. Subbaiah, former MLC, on Saturday criticised certain environmentalists from outside Kodagu for “harassing” farmers in the name of conservation of flora and fauna.

Addressing presspersons here along with members of the Small Growers’ Association of Siddapura, he accused them of misleading the Supreme Court and the Karnataka High Court on issues relating to environment in the district.

Terming them pseudo-environmentalists, Mr. Subbaiah urged the State Government to initiate inquiries against them.

He said their intention was only to grab foreign funds in the name of conservation. On the controversy over opening of Kadamakal-Subramanya road near here, he said it was good that the legislators from Kodagu and the Deputy Commissioner were present at Kadamakal to take stock of the situation there recently. Now that the Supreme Court had instructed the Central Empowered Committee to assess the ground realities, the presence of legislators would lend credence that they had visited Kadamakal for the cause of the people.

The PIL filed by an individual from Kodagu stated that if the road was opened for movement of vehicles and people, it would lead to opening of shops along the route and result in indiscriminate tree felling. But Mr. Subbaiah said that it would help prevent poaching and timber smuggling.

Public meetings would be organised at various places in the district, starting from Gonicoppa in Virajpet taluk soon to expose the misdeeds of environmentalists, Mr. Subbaiah said.
