April 3: For the first time, a political party’s manifesto has mentioned about saving tigers and protecting the bio-diversity from effects of climate change.

The BJP, which released its manifesto on Friday, has a special mention on the national animal.

The BJP has promised that if it comes to power, it will take all appropriate steps to save tigers along with safeguarding critical habitats of all wildlife.

The party, in its manifesto, has stated that it will "pursue national growth objectives through ecologically sustainable pathway that leads to mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions."

The manifesto committee, chaired by senior party leader and former Union minister Dr Murli Manohar Joshi, decided to bring the issue of environment as it felt that this issue needs to be highlighted.

The party has also pledged to give appropriate importance to containing climate change.

The party manifesto states that mitigating the threat by building a low carbon economy is the biggest economic opportunity of the 21st century.

On the issue of energy security, the party said "impetus will be provided for the production of non-conventional energy by enabling people and firms to bank it in power grid and draw it at time of their need."

The party said it will provide adequate support for developing hybrid technologies to save energy and their applications.
