KOCHI: Barbara Gerard, president of Grande Gesture, a New York City-based conservation group, and founder of Elephant House, a learning centre for children based at Poomulli Mana in Palakkad district, has joined hands with the Rotary Club of Fort Cochin to celebrate Earth Hour on Saturday.

Multi-media event

A multi-media event has been planned on that evening at Hotel Abad, Chullickal, West Cochin.

The group here will connect with 30 million people across the globe to switch off lights from 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. on that evening as a symbolic gesture of the people’s determination to fight the adverse effects of climate change, says a communication.

As part of the programme, the group will introduce the climate change messengers, a herd of quirky toy elephants dressed in fanciful costumes, each depicting the five elements of life (panchabhoota)—space, Earth, fire, water and air, which are profoundly affected by climate change.

“It is for us to understand that both humans and elephants are interdependent and deeply affected by natural disasters, whether it is a hurricane, tornado, earthquake, forest-fire, thinning of ozone layer, pollution and most of all, the present global warming,” says Ms. Gerard.

The group acknowledges U.S. President Obama for the remarks in his inaugural address that: “We must work tirelessly to roll back the spectre of a warming planet and to act upon that which we cannot see.”

The programme will also include a PowerPoint presentation by Dr. David Abraham with images illustrating the conservation challenges facing our planet today. Saravanan, magician and ventriloquist, will interview Petal, Goodwill Ambassador of Elephant House, each of the five climate change messengers and perform a magic show to highlight important environmental issues. Jaffer, keyboard artist and drummer, will enliven the evening with his classic music and songs.

Exhibition

Recent artworks in acrylic on paper and canvas, inspired by elephants and the five elements, by the students of schools across the State will be exhibited. The guests will include representatives of Hinduism, Islam, Christianity and Judaism who will offer prayers for planet Earth and all of humanity.
