HYDERABAD: It is the government’s responsibility to act on and mitigate climate change, is the feeling of 29 per cent of youth from four major metros. This was revealed in a survey conducted for The British Council by The Nielson company in four cities viz., Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore. The survey also pointed to the poor motivation levels among youngsters (18 to 35 years) despite 55 per cent of them being aware that the impact of climate change may be felt within the next five to 15 years.

It is in this backdrop, Arun Krishnamurthy, youth co-ordinator of JGI TREE R&S stressed to an audience of city-based youngsters, “To bring the change, you need to be the change. This is a compulsion for your future. This is for your survival.”

Interaction session

With an idea to take the survey results to youth across India, Association of British Scholars and the British Library based in the city organised an interaction session with young minds at JNTU campus in Kukatpally on Thursday.

Following a short film on effects of climate change, a panel of experts headed by Dr. Sashikala, head of Centre for Environment of JNTU invited the audience to express their perceptions about climate change and opinions on how to reduce it.

Interesting suggestions such as use of both sides of paper for a thesis and switching to traditional herbal powders instead of soaps, toothpastes and detergents came up during the discussion.
