BANGALORE: Sunday morning marked a nine-kilometre marathon to remind citizens that there was a need to bring in energy-efficient systems and renewable energy options in the city.

A joint effort of the M.S. Ramaiah Institute (MSRIM) for Management, Greenpeace and Radio Indigo 91.9 FM, “The Green Run - Energy Revolution Now” marathon began and culminated at the management institute, and witnessed the participation of over 500 people.

“Bangalore is reeling under rising temperatures, having measured roughly 22 degrees Celsius only a few years ago as opposed to 33 degrees Celsius today, during the same time of the year,” said Brikesh, Climate Activist, Greenpeace, emphasising the need for an energy revolution. Sportspersons, including Nisha Millet, Rehan Poncha, Ashish Ballal, Shikha Tandon and Ashwini Nachappa, participated in it.

“We want the citizens of Bangalore to know that it is time they started replacing all the incandescent bulbs with CFLs and LEDs will actually overcome the peak power shortage in Bangalore,” said Nisha Millet.

During the course of the marathon, participants and “torchbearers” for a green and sustainable environment were periodically reminded of the “nine commandments” that needed to be followed to mitigate climate change. The “nine commandments” directed citizens to denounce coal and to use renewable energy to decarbonise power, among others.
