BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday expressed anguish over the failure of the authorities in taking steps to curb illegal mining. A Green (Special) Bench, comprising Chief Justice P.D. Dinakaran and Justice K.L. Manjunath, made this observation when it was dealing with 22 public interest litigation petitions dealing with environmental matters.

The Bench created history when it commenced hearing on petitions relating to forestry, mining and environmental norms. Cases from Circuit Benches at Dharwad and Gulbarga had been transferred to the Principal Bench here to be adjudicated by the Green Bench. The Bench regretted that the authorities had failed to act against illegal sand mining and that courts were giving stay on mining matters without studying the full facts of the case.

The Bench issued notices to the Government and respondents in several cases, while passing interim orders in some.
