DHARWAD: Scores of high school students took part in a painting competition on “Climate change” organised jointly by the Karnataka Rajya Vijnana Parishat, the Dharwad branch of the Institute of Engineers (India) and the Science and Technology Centre, Dharwad, here on Sunday.

Addressing the gathering during the prize distribution ceremony held later, Shantiraj Kunchi said urban life would become healthy only when steps were taken to scientifically dispose off solid waste.

He spoke about the segregation of solid waste and its disposal, and called upon students to make use of products that could be recycled.

Vasant Desai of the KHK Polytechnic elaborated on rainwater harvesting techniques to revive water bodies.

Aravind Kulkarni, who also spoke on rainwater harvesting, said it helped increase the water table.

Earlier, the participating children drew paintings on themes such as the disastrous effects climatic change had cast on the environment and day-to-day life of humans and animals.
