NEW DELHI: A journey spanning almost the entire country and 4,000 km covered in vehicles run on alternative fuels. A group of youngsters who believe that the means of fighting climate change are available and want the country to sit up and take notice. A music band that uses solar energy to power its instruments. The roadshow undertaken by the Indian Youth Climate Network (IYCN) along with New York-based band Solar Punch, that started in Chennai on January 3 and will culminate in Delhi on February 4, sends out precisely that message that solutions exist, that people themselves are the solution and they need to act fast.

IYCN was formed less than a year back by a group of young individuals who felt that India lacked youth leaders who could take up issues of climate change. They networked with other organisations, organised summits and training programmes and before the road show commenced, the network had about 400 members across the country. The road show was an attempt to travel across India, document how different areas had adapted to the changing environment and what steps were taken to reduce carbon footprints. In the course of their journey, the members interacted with people and spoke to them about their roles in combating climate change.

The journey started with three electric cars, a van powered by solar energy, a van running on waste vegetable oil, a truck running on biofuel and about 20 members. "We have covered about 15 big cities in the past month. It has literally been a circus as we go from town to town, talking to people, performing, celebrating. At the end of this, we will create a database of our findings, take a charter to the government and offer solutions for others,'' said Deepa Gupta, one of the executive directors of IYCN.
