VADODARA: Substantial increase in CNG-operated vehicles plying in the city and daily cleaning work have reduced the pollution level of Vadodara city drastically in the last four years, according to Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB).

Industrial and infrastructure development in the city led to increase in the pollution level, following which Vadodara earned the dubious distinction of being described as the state's most polluted city in 2005. But, the then collector Rajiv Topno constituted a task force, which included regional officer of pollution control board, Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials and two senior citizens. The steps taken after recommendations of the task force have yielded results and the number of CNG-based industries have gone up to 60 and CNG-operated vehicles that were just 200 in number have risen to 18,000.

The figures of National Ambient Air Monitoring Programme for residential and industrial areas of Vadodara showed dust particle level at 90 micro gram per cubic meter, which rose to 105 in 2006, but came down to 86 in 2007 and was recorded at the lowest of 56 in 2008.

"Pollution control board gathers its statistical information after checking the pollution level in Dandiya Bazaar, fire brigade, race course, Nandesari GIDC, Gotri, Bapod, Chhani, Makarpura GIDC, Alembic Road and Kareli Baug," said regional officer of pollution control board AA Daulati.

"The dust particle levels in Dandiya Bazaar and fire brigade areas have recorded a decrease of 45 points in the past four years," said Daulati.

Along with CNG-based vehicles, increase in the number of traffic signals across the city, door-to-door garbage collection, scientific disposal of the waste and number of flyover bridges have also helped in making city less polluted in the past four years.
