NEW DELHI: Environmentalists are critical of both the Congress and BJP for failing to present "green" manifestos to ensure sustainable development of the national capital.

"Environmental issues find no mention in manifestos either of BJP or Congress. A one-liner on Yamuna river has been included only to appease religious sentiments of people," V K Jain, green activist from NGO Tapas said.

S A Naqvi of the NGO Citizens Front for Water Democracy echoed similar sentiments. "Even when it comes to the river restoration, both parties seeking power have not elaborated on how they would implement the plans given crores have already been spent to clean the river."

For politicos, environment has been last priority, environmentalists claimed.

"Whatever is being done whether it about the health of water bodies or air pollution is on the orders of the court," Jain said.

"Master Plan has given special emphasis on environment but the parties have not elaborated in their manifesto on how they would achieve it," Jain added.

Vikram Soni, an IIT professor and environmentalist said that though he was yet to go through the poll manifestos but what ever he could gather from the media, "it seems the politicians are yet to understand the value of environment."

"An healthy ambiance ensure health of citizens. But political parties seem to be least bothered about it but are concerned about votes only," he added.
