Union Coal Secretary HC Gupta will inaugurate clearinghouse of coalmine methane (CMM)/ coal-bed methane (CBM) on Monday at CMPDI.

The main objectives of the clearinghouse are to support organisations involved in the implementation of the CMM/CBM related global climate change prevention projects and to encourage collaboration between Governmental and commercial organisations through the development and implementation of projects.

Clearinghouse will promote recovery and utilisation of coal-based non-conventional and environment friendly clean energy resource. Its major objective is to facilitate project development for the utilisation of India's coalbed and coalmine methane resources.

The Union Government and United States Environment Protection Agency (USEPA) had signed MOU in the year 2006 for the establishment of clearinghouse. CMPDI is actively associated in developing strategies for CMM development in the country and is pursuing development of CBM resource in the country since 1990s.

Chairman-cum-managing director of the Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI) AK Singh said Chairman of Coal India Limited (CIL) PS Bhattacharya, Consulate General, US consulate, Kolkatta, Beth Payne, and many other dignitaries would attend the function on Monday.

To mark the occasion a team of USEPA, US officials and representatives of the American Industry will also be present in the occasion.

The clearinghouse inauguration ceremony will be followed by a two day workshop titled "CBM/CMM development in India: An opportunity area". Eminent personalities from India and abroad are expected to deliberate in the workshop.
