CUDDALORE: Forest officials on Saturday rescued 100 birds including little egrets and pond herons from poachers at Vandipalayam and Sanrorpalayam. The poachers, however, fled on seeing the officials.

Modus operandi

Forest Range Officer T. Krishnamurthy told The Hindu that the poachers used to tie a 500-metre wire to a net at the places frequented by the birds. They would also sprinkle feed to attract the birds.

Mr. Krishnamurthy said that the birds rescued would be set free into the wild.

Penalty

Those nabbed in this connection would be booked under the Wild Life Protection Act and attract a penalty of up to Rs. 5,000 and a remand of 15 days. Stringent action would be taken against those indulging in illegal poaching, he warned.
