Nagercoil: Necessary steps would be taken to develop Mangrove forests in Manakudi, Kadiyapatinam and Thengapattinam with an intention to check ‘global warming,’ said the District Forest Officer, Sundararaju.

Presiding over a function organised on Friday to provide training on global warming and climate change, he said that there were more than 10 check dams in the district and the district was blessed with the western ghats, which helped maintain the climate. The district was also bestowed with rich flora and funa, contributing to the balance in climate of the district.

“All the creatures in the universe helped each other to keep the equilibrium of the universe while human beings alone destroyed it in the name of civilization and modernization.

The modern achievements had been producing all sorts of pollutions, the trees and forest help to protect the globe from pollution, Mr.Sunderaraju said..

But human beings are destroying the forests, resulting in the global warming and climate change.

It is now, he said that the society had understood the impact of global warming and climate change through the disasters occurring everywhere.

As far as the district was concerned he attributed the sea erosion and salt-water seepage into ground water, a common incidence in the district to these factors.

‘Rucode India,’ a non-government organization gathered youngsters to create awareness among them about the role of trees and forests in reducing global warming.

Exhibition of herbs

In order to explain the importance of siddha medicines, an exhibition on herbal plants was also conducted.

With the help of the Forest Department, Rucode distributed saplings to six coastal villages Kanyakumari, Kovalam, Chinnamuttom, Arokiapuram, Koottapuzhi and Perumanal.
