DHAKA: Bangladesh has tightened security in the Sundarbans mangrove forest to protect the deer population from depletion against widespread poaching, forest officials said.

Organised gangs of poachers have been operating in the UNESCO World Heritage site Sundarbans, 400 km (250 miles) southwest of the capital Dhaka, they said.

"We have asked law enforcing authorities to take action against poachers," said Amalendra Shaha," a senior forest official said.

At least 10 poachers, with dozens of traps have been detained. More than 100 kg of meat and several deer skins were recovered by law enforcers over the last two weeks, he said.
