Focussing on climate change a pre-proposal workshop of National Environmental Awareness Campaign (NEAC) was organised by the State Environment Department and Centre for Environmental Studies in support with the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest at Regional Plant Resource Centre (RPRC) here on Wednesday.

While outlining the reasons and effects of the climate change, director-cum-special secretary of forest and environment department Bhagirathi Behera said the NEAC activities had been continuing since 1986 under the Ministry of Forest and Environment and was running in 15 districts of the State.

According to him, global warming caused by industrialisation and massive use of vehicles is the root of climate change and Orissa is already hit hard by it. Global warming causes the sea level rise due to the melting of glaciers and 1 meter rise in sea level would result in submerge of 1,500 acres of agricultural land in the coastal State like Orissa. Village after village in Kendrapara, Puri and Gopalpur areas are gradually vanishing in the sea water.

Senior scientist of Forest and Environment Department Liaquat Ali elaborated various practical measures to tackle the climate change. All participating experts emphasised on reducing carbon dioxide emission which is driving the global climate change and causing excessive thunderstorm and lightning by increasing efficiency of existing power plants using clean coal technologies. Programme Officer of Centre for Environmental Studies GK Pujari also joined the workshop.
