The Chandigarh Administration has appealed to all the residents to support for the "Earth Hour" event aimed at creating awareness about global warming, which is being organised by World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

The main aim of the event is to spread awareness about environment, climatic change and promoting it using futuristic technologies. It also focuses on motivating the young minds towards environment friendliness.

This global event would require voluntarily switching off of lights on March 29 at 8pm to represent united concern about global warming and climate change.

This small contribution from the citizens of Chandigarh will send a powerful message that Chandigarians care about their planet.

In Chandigarh, the initiative has been taken by a group of B Tech students "Environment saviours" including Brhamesh Alipunia, Sahil Kamal, Abhilasha Bhasin, Divya Soni, Swati and Prashant Chopra all from UIET, Panjab University. A social group of UIET, Panjab University, named 'MITRA' is also observing the Earth Hour in the University.

Earth Hour is the highlight of a major campaign to encourage businesses, communities and individuals to take the simple steps needed to cut their emissions on an ongoing basis.

It is about simple changes that will collectively make a difference - from businesses turning off their lights when their offices are empty, to households turning off appliances rather than leaving them on standby.

Last year, WWF - Australia pioneered Earth Hour and it was a huge success, almost 2.3 million Sydney siders participated in the event including 2,100 businesses, resulting in a 10 percent reduction on the electrical grid, saving 25,000 tonnes of Carbon dioxide.

Haryana Renewable Energy Development Agency (HAREDA) has also given its consent in promoting the event.
