Experts warn of threats due to climate change

Experts made an in-depth analysis of climate change and its subsequent effect on humanity and bio-diversity in the seminar Global Warming and Climate Change organised by the Asian Education Society in collaboration with Indian Institute of Forest Management and State Forest Department on Saturday.

Sekhar Singh, former advisor to the Planning Commission on Forest and Environment,discussing the Global Warming and Climate Change-genesis and causes elaborated the gray areas responsible for the problematic situation we are in.

He discussed critical issues like depleted forest cover in the country at around 12 percent against the required 33 per cent. He elaborated the imminent threats like food contamination, reoccurring floods and droughts, rapid loss of species, neglected bio-diversity etc.

Discussing the corrective measures he said that initiatives like collective responsibility, alternative habitats, devising genetic corridors, cutting emissions, resorting to power saving and need for pressurize the Government for taking the matter seriously.

Replying to the queries from the participants he flayed the union Government's decision for allotting government land to the landless saying that it might lead to unfair means.

Speakers also criticised the allotment of forestland to the tribal community saying that wild life is exploited being the soft targets in the era of vote bank politics. Suman Sahay, President Gene Campaign discussed the impact of climate change on agriculture and food security.

One of the forest officials present at the seminar accepted that though the initiatives taken by the state government for mitigating the effects of climate change are miniscule but termed them as positive beginning.

He informed about the projects of urja vihar, vidya vihar and charvaha vikas projects initiated by the Government.
