Global warming once considered a gradually increasing threat is suddenly looming large over humanity, said Shekhar Singh, subject expert for global warming and Right to Information (RTI) Act while informing the media about the one-day workshop on 'Global Warming and Climate Change' being organised by the State Forest Department and Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM) on March 15. Singh along with other retired administrative officers are working under the banner of Asian Education Society for generating public awareness for environmental issues and good governance.

Referring to the IPCC report and recent scientific studies Singh said that the climate change problems might be even worse than previously feared. He informed that climate change might lead to disastrous results as it might cause change in the pattern of crops, forests and outbreak of new epidemics.

He said that destruction of crop pattern would lead to starvation and later the situation could result in serious law and order problems. Ashwani Luthra, former IT Commissioner Bhopal said that there were plans for organising workshops on administration and ethics in the near future and added that a large number of serving bureaucrats had expressed the desire to be a part of this.

He added that as the RTI Act was completing three years of since it came into existence in 2005, they were planning to review how it had been implemented at various levels of administration for the betterment of the public.

Retired Major General MS Kandal claimed that nobody was really bothered about the threat of the global warming these days. Officials claimed that MP had to be extra careful towards the possible effects of climate changes as a substantial portion of the population depended on climate sensitive sectors like agriculture and forests.
