ADILABAD: The finding of a slightly mutilated carcass of a ‘neelgai’ in the Mavala forest on Tuesday reiterated the fact that poaching of the desi variety still takes place in Adilabad.

The still bleeding dead body that was located by a shepherd in the afternoon sent officials scurrying to the spot.

Resting place

The ‘neelgai’ was apparently chased by local hunters before it selected its final resting place by the side of a rock that perhaps acted as a lee to the injured animal.

There were small holes on its body while the scrotal area looked as if it was mutilated by some sharp weapon.

Officials opine

Forest officials opined that the ‘neelgai’ was pierced by a spear like country made weapon.

They pointed out that hunters are able to attack the animal from close range because of its comparatively slower movement.

A veterinarian conducted a post mortem before the animal was consigned to flames in the forest. Adilabad Forest Range Officer Madhusudan Rao, Beat Officer Nicolus and others visited the spot.
