Protest rally at GU against rhino poaching

GUWAHATI, Feb 18 – Members of the Gauhati University (GU) community on Saturday took out a procession to register their protest against the incidents of poaching of rhinos. The procession was organised by the University’s Post-Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU).

GU PGSU general secretary Moon Kumar Bora said that the members of the Teachers’ Association, Officers’ Association and the Workmen’s Union of the University, besides the PGSU took part in the procession.

The participants of the procession paraded the NH-37 between the University main gate and the Jalukbari roundabout. They condemned the heinous acts of rhino poaching and demanded steps to conserve forest areas and to protect the precious wildlife of the State. They also demanded steps to evict the encroachers from the forestland, Bora said. He also apprised that a 40-member team of the GU community members, led by the PGSU, would leave for Kaziranga to stage a sit-in demonstration there in protest against the poaching of the rhinos.
