BANGALORE: The Ministry of Earth Sciences has proposed to study the impact of global warming on different ecological systems, including forest, coasts, islands and mountains for better understanding and detection of climate change in the country, said K.J. Ramesh, Project Officer (Multi Hazard) of the Ministry.
Making a presentation on “Challenges of climate change and its relevance to India” here on Thursday, Mr. Ramesh said the Ministry had planned to place about 30 observation towers at different locations to study various aspects, including the fluctuations in the greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane, concentration of aerosols and increase in the humidity and its impact on different ecosystems.
Mr. Ramesh was participating in a seminar on “Climate Change and Hazard Management” organised by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre.
Talking to presspersons later, Mr. Ramesh said the study was part of efforts for developing localised data on climate change, which would help in better management of disasters. He said the study was similar to Ameriflux and Euroflux network of observations of ecosystem set up in the U.S. and Europe. “This proposal is yet to be approved by the Centre,” he said.
Lack of coordination
Chairman of Legislative Council B.K. Chandrashekar said there was lack of coordination between different departments in dealing with disasters. The political leadership should seriously address issues such as permanent loss of soil, forest degradation and drought.
