DINDIGUL: Burning of plastic wastes, tubes and tyres for Bogi festival, scheduled to be celebrated on January 14, is completely banned in the district to prevent air pollution.

Stern action

Stern action would be taken against violators under section 15 of Environment (Protection) Act 1986, according to collector R. Vasuki.

In a release here on Tuesday, she said that people should extend total cooperation with the district administration in protecting air and environment.

She said that burning of tyres, tubes and other rubber products and plastic wastes was being practiced in town areas for a long time.

Affects health

Burning these materials would generate huge quantum of carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide that affected people’s health.

Moreover, dense smoke and black particles generated from burning of wastes would certainly disturb vision of drivers on prime roads in the town.

Leads to accidents

Sometimes, such an act would lead to accidents also, she noted.

Ms. Vasuki also warned that violation of the ban would even attract fine and imprisonment.

“We had successfully prevented burning of wastes in the district for the past five years. With cooperation of people, we could achieve it this year also.”

The police, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board officials and fire service personnel would keep a vigil in this regard.
