New Delhi, Dec 18: Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal on Tuesday asked the Indian industry to start adopting cleaner technologies to help India become a low-carbon economy.

“We need to take action to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change. We are committed to reducing our greenhouse gases,” said Sibal, who led the Indian delegation at the recently concluded conference in Bali, at a press conference here.

Sibal said India, along with other developing countries at the conference, had successfully blocked the attempt by the developed nations to impose emission targets on countries like India and China. “But we are not running away from our responsibility. We just want to give time to our industry to adapt. The message to our industry is that we have to be a low carbon economy sooner rather than later. So, utilise the time that we have and start taking steps to adopt newer and cleaner technologies,” he said, adding that the industry would get all help from the Government in this regard.

“The Government is ready to provide alternative technology options and even tax incentives,” he said.

Sibal said the Bali conference was a major success for the developing countries. “The developed countries were insisting on at least some emission reductions by countries like India and China. We said it could not happen in the absence of technology transfer, financing and capacity building in the developing world by the developed countries in a measurable, reportable and verifiable manner.”
