MYSORE: The Mysore city police have decided to crack down on vehicles causing noise and air pollution.

As a first step, City Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao said all vehicles of the Police Department, including his vehicle, would be subjected to emission test from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB)-certified outlets.

“We have to ensure our vehicles comply with the norms prescribed for minimising pollution and become environment friendly. Then, we shall act to ensure others follow suit,” Mr. Rao told The Hindu.

“I do not know whether the vehicles belonging to the city police, including the two-wheelers, have undergone emission test in the past. Nonetheless, before embarking on any step to check air pollution, our vehicles will first pass the test and get green certificate,” said Mr. Rao, who took over as the police chief recently. The Police Commissioner said he had spoken to the officials of the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and the KSPCB on the steps taken by them to tackle noise and air pollution.

Ten teams comprising one official each from the Police Department, RTO and the Department of Weights and Measures will be constituted to check autorickshaws that are causing noise pollution by altering their silencers pipes (exhaust pipes), from September 5. The drive will also check whether fare meters are working properly in the autorickshaws.

Mr. Rao said the drive would be conducted randomly for four to five days from the date of launch. It would be resumed after some days so that others would take necessary steps to minimise noise pollution.
