AGARTALA, Aug 27 – A part of the Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary, the home of the endangered bison, would soon be declared as a national park, Tripura Forest Minister Jiten Chowdhury said.
The State Government felt it necessary to declare 39 sq km of the 250 sq km sanctuary as a national park for preservation of the bison, as this species was at the verge of extinction, he said.
Chowdhury said, earlier there were about 150 bisons in the sanctuary but the number has decreased to 100 due to poaching and habitat loss.
The proposal was being sent to the National Zoo Authority of India for its approval.
The Minister said, the Sipaheejala Wildlife Sanctuary was earlier declared as a national park for preservation of the clouded leopard which yielded results as the leopards got good breeding grounds. – PTI
