London, Aug. 13: Protesters have started to arrive at "climate change camp" near Heathrow airport to join a week-long protest, which officially begins on Tuesday, against plans to expand the airport.

The Camp for Climate Action started work on Sunday on a site north of Heathrow between the villages of Sipson and Harlington. The organisers expect more than 1,500 protesters from across the UK and Europe to join the event that will educate people on sustainable living and on taking direct action against the "root causes" of climate change. They have also forged links with locals who are resisting the building of a third runway. The organisers have also planned 24 hours of mass action from midday of Sunday August 19 to midday of August 20. However, the details have not been finalised for mass action.

The week-long camp will target the government’s airport expansion plans and raise awareness among people of the need to fly less. The organisers want to create solutions within communities rather than flying to escape to other parts of the world.

Chief superintendent Ian Thomas met organisers of the camp as dozens of police officers toured the settlement and talked to campaigners during an inspection on Monday.
