Give wildlife a chance, pleads Zubeen

BOKAKHAT, Aug 1 – State singing sensation Zubeen Garg along with 50 other celebrated artistes of the State today appealed to the people to safeguard wildlife and stop killing them at a rally which started from Bokakhat and ended at Ghorakati near Burhapahar. According to information derived from the organisers, film director Pulok Gogoi, artiste Noni Borpuzari, Champak Barbara, Khogen Gogoi, Biman Boruah, Diganta Bharati, Krishnamoni Chutia, Mrinalkanti, Pabitra Margherita and Manas Robin besides Zubeen took part in the rally.

The programme was organised by BHUMI, a Bokakhat-based NGO, Aranyak, People for Animals, Department of Forests and Environment, Government of Assam and Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) in a bid to generate awareness on wildlife conservation and curbing poaching. The Journalists’ Association of Assam, Photo Journalists’ Association, AASU, NSUI, Asom Unnati Sabha and Asom Sena are reported to have co-operated in the programme.

Zubeen sang a special song composed for the occasion.

Artistes Pulok Gogoi, Noni Borpuzari and Champak Barbara painted pictures on the spot at Kohora in sync with the occasion. Zubeen burnt an effigy of a poacher at the spot.

It may be pertinent to mention here that poachers at the KNP are enjoying a field day killing more than ten rhinos in this year itself defying the security measures of the park authorities.
