Training programme for anti-poaching watchers concludes

Udhagamandalam: A five-day training programme for the anti-poaching watchers of the Forest Department, the Nilgiris South Division, concluded at Parsons Valley near here on Monday.

Jungle training

Among those who imparted the jungle training were personnel of the Special Task Force (STF). It included various forms of exercise, unarmed combat, ambush, water harvesting, section formation, use of weapons, patrolling, stretcher making, first aid and intelligence collection.

Valedictory function

Participating as the chief guest at the valedictory function, the Vice-president, Nilgiri Wildlife and Environment Association (NWLEA), Geetha Srinivasan, said at the global-level poaching of tigers for their skin has become a serious source of concern. She said that thanks to the dedicated officers conservation measures were effective in various parts of the Nilgiris particularly the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park.

The Additional Superintendent of Police, STF, Thirunavukkarasu, said various constraints notwithstanding the anti-poaching watchers were enthusiastic. He urged them to make the optimum use of such training programmes. The District Forest Officer, South Division, Rakesh Kumar Jagenia, and Forest Veterinary Officer N. Kalaivanan also spoke.

A demonstration by the trainees marked the occasion. The Senior Programme Officer, World Wide Fund for Nature, N. Mohanraj proposed a vote of thanks.
