CHANDIGARH: The arrest of three persons from a poaching tribe has once again brought to light how certain species of birds and animals are being blasted out of existence in the Shiwalik foests. The Sikligars — a nomadic tribe active in Shivalik forests, especially in Hoshiarpur, uses a deadly bait: a ball of explosive hidden in a wheat dough. When the animal swallows it there is a blast in its mouth or stomach. At times, the animal suffers for days before dying. All this for the musky perfume extracted from the anal glands of Civet consumed by tribe. They also net partridges and supply these to senior officials or sell them at dhabas.

"Their modus operandi is to deploy snares, traps, nets, explosive balls at night and hunt with dogs during day. The partridge population has been wiped out because of Sikligars," said Gunraj Singh Saini, Honorary Wildlife Warden, Hoshiarpur who caught group of people hunting with dogs, on November 11 at Saila Khurd and recovered one jungle cat and one Civet and a wild rabbit as well as eight traps. The wild cats and civets fall in schedule 2, part 2 of the Wild Life Protection Act while rabbit is covered in schedule-4. A team sent by DFO Garhshankar arrested the three poachers — Bant Singh, Ajaib Singh and Taar. The trio have been charged under Section 9, Section 39 and Section 51 of Wild Life Protection Act 1972 and were produced before the duty magistrate who sent them to judicial custody till November 26.
