Shopkeepers to push eco-friendly crackling fare

This diwali, shopkeepers selling firecrackers in the Capital are playing a twin role, that of shopkeepers and of 'teachers.' This is because they have taken it upon themselves to educate the customers about the `noiseless' and `eco-friendly' firecrackers. Not many people in the Capital are aware of the existence of such crackers for which the manufacturers had gone all the way to China to learn the nuances. With the Delhi Government sending out appeals to the citizens not to use crackers as they create noise and air pollution, and harm asthma patients, who, incidentally are on the rise in the Capital, the cracker manufacturers have also become aware and concerned about the pollution which is caused from the smoke of the crackers.
So in keeping with the Government's and the citizens' concern, cracker manufacturers have introduced around 10 to 15 new varieties of noiseless and eco-friendly crackers. Some of the eco-friendly and noiseless varieties that have been introduced in the market are Cracking diamond, Chinese blast ball, Silver sprinkler, Twin angle, Star wars. Though these crackers are manufactured in Shivakasi in South India but the manufactures had gone to China to learn the techniques used to make eco-friendly and noiseless firecrackers.
"These are specially designed crackers, they make less noise and create less pollution. These crackers were first introduced in China and hence the manufactures went to China to learn the nuances," said Rakesh Khanna, a shopkeeper in Sadar Bazaar. However, the shopkeepers are finding it difficult to educate the people about these newly-introduced crackers. "People are not aware of these crackers, but once they are told about the benefits they are willing to buy, in fact, most of them prefer to buy these in bulk," said Mukul Sharma, a distributor. In a bid to control the air and noise pollution, the quality of the crackers has also been improved this time. The gunpowder which emanates a lot of smoke after burning the cracker will no longer be there. "In pathako mein se barood ka dhooan nahi niklega aur is saal yeh pehli bar market mein aaye hai," said Kapil Mahajan, a shopkeeper in Jama Mazjid.
