NEW DELHI, NOV. 4. The Union Environment and Forests Ministry has not received any proposal from the State Government for the protection and development of Sathyamangalam jungles in Tamil Nadu following the killing of forest brigand, Veerappan, last month.

Replying to queries from reporters at the Fifth Social Editor's Conference here today, the Union Environment and Forests Minister, A. Raja, said it would seriously consider any proposal on protection and development of Sathyamangalam jungles, whichwere virtually under Veerappan's `occupation' for several decades. It was almost impossible for a Government official to enter the forests, he said.

His Government was committed to protecting forests across the country and any proposal received from any State would be considered. All States, including those lying near the border States, were asked to keep a tight vigil on infiltration and poaching from across the border."The Centre is willing to offer latest weapons, training and communication equipment to States to protect the forests,'' he said.
