Everyday migratory birds are arriving at Chilika Lake from Siberia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia. Within a week, more than 2.5 lakh migratory birds have reached here. Rare spices pintel, wizen, kopserpoacher, gendi and panda birds have sheltered in Parikuda, Banagoda, Durabari, Nalabana, Bhusundapur, Kalupada, Mangalajodi and Mahisa areas of the lake.

To protect the winged guests from poachers and hunters, the wildlife division has opened 16 camps in different areas. But despite all arrangements, poachers and hunters have upgraded their poaching style to avoid vigil of the patrolling teams. When the wildlife division guards are conducting patrolling by motor boats, the poachers are poaching birds in the name of fishing by power boats. They are poaching birds entering to bird sheltering areas.

The wildlife division has opened camps at Sorana, Kalupada Ghatt, Mangalajodi, Sundarpur, Balipatapur, Abhimanpur, Bhusundapur, Baduribara, Rahanbil, Badagoda, Durubali, Balinasi and special two camps at Nalabana bird sanctuary. Guards of all camps are conducting round the clock duty.

The Government has provided VHF sets, binoculars and powerboats to every camp. But poachers have continued poaching in the Chilika Lake. Recently three dead migratory birds were recovered by the locals.
