UDALGURI, Sept 12 – Next to the Manas and Orang wildlife sanctuaries in the Bodoland Territorial Council region, the Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary in Udalguri district occupies an important place on the map of wildlife resources of the BTC region having much scope for encouraging tourism prospect in the region.

The sanctuary is attached to the Himalayan range of mountains bordering Bhutan in the north and is enriched with flora and fauna, including endangeredspecies like slow lorris, wild boar, bear, peacocks and wild pigs. According to sources here, due to the increasing trend of man-animal conflict, the wild animals of the sanctuary are now facing threat of extinction. Since the concerned forest department is found quite indifferent to the proper conservation and security to the wildlife of the sanctuaries, many of the species have shifted their habitats in the jungles of Bhutan.

It has become a matter of much concern that the total area of the sanctuary is decreasing due to encroachment by human. Unabated illegal felling of trees inside the sanctuary has posed a threat to the wildlife, while due to callous attitude of the forest department, the villagers neighbouring the sanctuary allege that some of the forest officials have nexus with anti-social elements responsible for felling of trees and poaching in the sanctuary.

Still, the sanctuary has not lost its pristine glory. If the BTC authority in particular takes special initiatives to protect the sanctuary from the clutches of anti social elements and transform it into a tourism spot, there is much scope for employment and revenue generation. Recently, the initiative taken by Biswajit Daimary, chairman of Artfed, and Dimakuchi anchalik ABSU for the protection of the sanctuary generated hope among the people. The ABSU has been demanding armed equipments for the forest guards of Bornadi wildlife sanctuary to protect it from the influence of anti social elements. Significantly the forest guards of the sanctuary are still ill-equipped with sticks to protect the vast area of the sanctuary!

The Udalguri district unit of ABSU and the Dimakuchi anchalik unit of the students' organisation demanded modernisation of the forest department to tackle anti social elements who are instrumental in destroying the flora and fauna of the sanctuary.
