Probe on into poaching of Niligiri Langur

| Thiruvananthapuram: The Forest Department is investigating three persons in connection with the killing of a Nilgiri Langur, an endangered species, in Pariyaram Forest range this week. One of the main suspects in the case is a panchayat member, official sources said. The other two are Karnataka-based businessmen hailing from Kannur district.
The incident of poaching came to light when the police discovered the carcass of the animal in a car during a routine vehicle checking exercise at Chittoor on August 21. The driver of the vehicle was handed over to the Forest Department. He has been booked (Crime 11/2006-Pariyaram Range) under sections 9, 39, 50 and 51 of the Wild Life Protection Act, 1972. S. Dhanesh Kumar, Forest Range Officer, Vellikulangara, is investigating the case. Wildlife enforcers suspect the simian was killed for making `Karimkurangu Rasayanam,' an Ayurvedic preparation.
