Challan filed against SDM in poaching case

In an important development in the peacock hunting case against former Pathankot SDM Puneet Goel, the Department of Wildlife has filed a challan in a court against him now posted as Administrative Officer, Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Punjab, Chandigarh, Mohinder Singh of Hambra village at Tanda and Makhan Singh of Pathankot.

In the challan, it has been alleged that on February 29 2004, at about 9.30 p.m., while forest officials were holding a naka a Mahindra jeep (PB-08N-5916), driven by Puneet Goel, was stopped. Two other persons, Makhan Singh and Mohinder Singh, were also accompanying Puneet Goel.

Mr Gunraj Singh and Mr Sukhdeep Singh Bajwa, honorary wildlife wardens, were also present at the site. During the search of the vehicle, carcasses of two peahens and four partridges were seized. A .12 bore double-barrelled gun and 28 cartridges of .12 bore were also seized.

The arms and birds were taken into possession and a damage report was prepared by the officials present at the site. The accused, however, refused to sign the documents. The accused were remanded in police custody and released on bail.

The reports of wildlife institute, Dehra Dun, and Central Forensic Laboratory have been attached with the challan, along with other relevant documents.
