KANCHEEPURAM: The Kancheepuram Municipality will soon acquire mechanical dumper placer bins under the Solid Waste Management Programme.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at the council meeting held here on Monday.

This was to offset the shortage of conservancy workers and also in response to complaints of mass piling up of garbage around temples and markets in the town.

The dumper placer bins and the dumper placer vehicle would cost around Rs 22 lakh and would be funded by the government under the Twelfth Finance Commission.

A total of Rs 43,70,323 had been allocated to Kancheepuram municipality for the Solid Waste Management Programme, of which Rs 31.54 lakh had been spent till date.

As many as 20 dumper placer bins would be kept in 20 vantage locations in the town.

Boycott: Accusing that developmental works were not being carried out and their wards were being neglected, councillors belonging to the AIADMK boycotted the council meeting on Monday.

Sand mining: Councillor Kuppan pointed out that a few months ago, the council resolved to stop sand mining in the Palar river bed. But again it had started, he said and recalled that DMK councillors Raghu, Chandru and Senguttuvan had vehemently opposed sand mining in the Palar in the past.

Chairman K Arumugam said that sand mining was being done in a controlled manner.

Councillor Nakussa complained that works had not started in Kavarai Street though the tender was finalised 10 months ago. The railway station road laid several years ago was badly damaged and should be re-laid, he said.

He also sought removal of the encroachments on the Market Road.

The chairman assured that the railway station road would be re-laid soon.
