The Himalaya Drug Company has said it has received the ISO-14001:2004 certification for environment management.

The herbal healthcare major said in a release that its comprehensive environment-friendly measures include setting up of a water treatment plant and sourcing water externally with low amount of total dissolved solids. This has cut its water consumption by 40,000 litres a day. A rainwater harvesting system has already been in place to improve the water table around the campus.

Other measures include counters to air pollution, steep reduction in consumption of fuel and power and a CFC-free air-conditioning unit at the R&D unit. The UK-based National Quality Assurance gave the certification.

"The world of nature is integral to our business and protecting it through sustainable practices makes good business sense," said Mr Ravi Prasad, CEO & President of HDC.

Himalaya is also putting in place a comprehensive waste management system, new pollution control equipment besides creating awareness on environmental protection within the company and the community around it, the release said.
