After the death of elephant Shankar in the Chandaka Reserve Forest due to spreading of infection while he was chained, a new controversy has arisen over chaining of elephant Motilal, brought from Gurujhatia jungle in Dhenkanal district one and a half years back to tame Shankar.

It may be mentioned here that Shankar had ransacked villages near Sakhigopal in Puri district and killed two people. He had strayed away from Chandaka Reserve Forest. Later, wildlife officials had trapped him and brought him to Chandaka and he had died due to infection.

The People for Animals have alleged that Motilal has been kept in chains in Chandaka Reserve Forest. He has suffered some wounds after the Mahout struck him with a spear. The chains are gradually helping in spreading the infections, which in Shankars case claimed his life. The organisation also alleged that the authorities using the elephant for anti poaching activities are not taking proper care of it

The Chandaka Divisional Forest Officer Suresh Mishra, however, denied the charges and said as the Mahout of Motilal is on leave; his assistant had chained him, while feeding him and bathing him. He said the injuries suffered by the elephant are not serious and can be treated.
