DAVANAGERE: To save environment from pollution all the local bodies in the state should have sewage water treatment plants as mandatory, opined district officer of Pollution Control board K M Lingaraj.

Speaking at the World Environment Day program organised at Shivayogi mandir here on Monday, he said out of 180 local bodies in the state only five or six had setup sewage water treatment plants. The effluents and toxic waste from industries was discharged to rivers or tanks directly. This would result in spreading of water borne diseases.

Environment also gets polluted due to excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. These factors have increased the incidence of contagious diseases by 70 percent, he pointed out.

Sinking borewells also cause pollution he said. Lingaraj said steps had been taken to install scientific stoves in puffed rice industries to prevent air pollution. Former dean of Law College Prof S H Patel spoke.

H S Shivshankar, MLC, suggested people to exercise self-restriction against excessive use of plastics in daily life. Hospitals should burn the waste, he added. Jayamruthyunjaya Swamiji, N T Manjunath were present.
