Four held for killing wild elephant

Dharmapuri: Four persons have been arrested on the charge of killing a wild elephant in the Biligundulu Reserve Forests on Tuesday.

According to Forest sources, the carcass of a male elephant aged around 7 years was found in a highly decomposed condition in the Biligundulu forests.

For tusks

The elephant was reportedly killed for its tusks in the forests more than a week ago.

Those arrested were Arjunan (54), Periyasamy (47), Sanjeevan (21) and Ravi (35) of Krishnagiri.

They have been charged with poaching under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972. According to the District Forest Officer, V. Ravindran, a special squad led by Hogenakkal Range Officer Natarajan in association with the Special Task Force have begun trekking the elephant corridors of Biligundulu and Hogenakkal Reserve Forests.

Watch towers

Watch towers would be constructed at all vantage points and anti-poaching camp will be introduced to monitor the movement of wild elephants in the Hogenakkal Reserve Forests, he said.
