Erode, Tamil Nadu: The population of tigers at the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve in the district has risen to 60, according to preliminary figures of a recent census.
The census was conducted recently in seven forest ranges in the STR and it was found that the tiger population has increased to 60, as against 40 during the previous census, District Forest Officer Arunlal told reporters here on Monday.
Six teams conducted the census work and the final report would be released soon, he said.
The increase in tiger population was due to the steps taken by the department against poaching and provision of facilities like water to the animals inside the forest areas, he said.
