Umaria: A tiger death was reported from Umaria district on Monday, the second within a fortnight in the state.

Sources told News18 that the body of an adult tigress was found in Barwah area of Ghunghuti forest in Umaria, around 500km from Bhopal.

The big cat perhaps died on Saturday night, possibly due to electrocution, they said. The forest department had taken the body of tigress into their possession by Monday afternoon.

Umaria Divisional Forest Officer Vasu Kannaujia could not be reached for comments on the incident.

Recently, another adult tiger had died due to electrocution in Kalyanpur area of Shahdol district, some 60km from Umaria. The death is still being probed by the forest department.

According to National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), a total of 71 tigers died between Jan 1 to Sep 30 in 2017 in India, of which 17, maximum among states, died in Madhya Pradesh.

Of the total 100 tiger mortalities reported in the country last year, total 30 were reported from Madhya Pradesh, according to the figures of NTCA- a statutory body under the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change.

“It’s highly unfortunate that forest department’s responsibility is yet to be fixed in the death of a tiger and a leopard recently and in the demise of a tigress on Monday,” secretary, volunteer organisation Prayatna, Ajay Dubey, said.
