Animals die due to untreated waste from 977 industries mixing in the river

Tired of Taloja MIDC area’s desolate condition at the Navade Village, which is under constant cover of hazardous pollutants and effluents from chemical, steel and plastic industries, residents have approached the National Green Tribunal for aresolution.

The haggard plight came to light after a Right to Information query surfaced, asking for measures to curb pollution at the Kasardi river. The query filed by advocate Chetan R Nagare on September 11, 2017 received an appalling response a week later mentioning that the M Block of the MIDC has leakages in the pipelines carrying the effluent waste, which has been mixing with Kasardi river. Now, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has issued closure notices to these industries. The applicant has held the Ministry of Environment and Forest and Climate Change, Union of India and State of Maharashtra, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), MPCB, Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and four other as respondents of the application.

“Life, public health and ecology have priority over unemployment and loss of revenue. Excess pollution in the Taloja MIDC area is alarming and thus it is imperative that the authorities give priority to their statutory obligations for providing a cleaner environment,” said advocate Sudhakar E Avhad.

The disquieting situation was presented by the applicant through various incidents. It was supplemented by a MPCB study which mentioned that the pollution at the Kasadi river was 13 times above the safe limit. The 863.18 hectare area houses 977 industries. It desolation has come forward in instances like dog turning blue before dying and fish floating on the river. Furthermore, due to heavy air pollution in the area, the smog has exceeded the permissive limit and is causing respiratory diseases. The residents have to live in pungent and unbearable atmosphere.

Adding to the situation, a singular Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) for the 977 industries has also added to the horrors of the situation.

Nagare told Mirror, “The reckless discharge of industrial effluents in Kasardi and Ghot rivers is adversely affecting the livelihood of local farmers and fisherman since they are dependent on these water bodies. The situation has been brought about by colour-dye industries located in the Taloja MIDC area.

Air Pollution caused due to excessive emission of the effluent in is causing various respiratory diseases among locals.”

Advocate Manasi Joshi representing MPCB refused to react on the matter. She said, “I think since tomorrow is the first hearing we would present our case in front of NGT only.”
