PUNE: Noise, river and air pollution are high in the city and the situation is worsening, observations for the last five years have shown.

The Environment Status Report said streams are polluted and the problem persists along both the Mula and Mutha river banks. There has been a constant increase in the bio-chemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen (COD) demand in the rivers' waters has increased three times in areas like Vitthalwadi, Mhatre bridge, Erandwane and Omkareshwar.

"The increased BOD and COD is because of rapid urbanisation in the fringes. The situation may aggravate due to the burden on the natural resources by rising population. Increase in population is adding to the problem," Mangesh Dighe, environment officer, said.

Factors like PS 2.5 and PS 10 (particles in the air), harmful for heath, are more than the permissible limits giving rise to poor air quality and related health hazards. Rising vehicle population is a hurdle in dealing with air pollution.

Sound pollution, which has been concern for years, generated in almost all the industrial, residential and commercial areas, is above permissible limits, the report added.

Dighe said the use of loudspeakers, domestic and commercial equipment and instruments are key contributors to sound pollution in the city.

"The approach of looking at the river as commodity should be changed. Steps must to be taken to the augment river streams. But it has not been done. The encroachments have added to the problem," said Sarang Yadwadkar, an environmentalist.

Prashant Inamdar of Pedestrian First organisation said that the civic body should take efforts to improve green cover in the city. "The mass tree cutting in different areas of the city is having an adverse effect on the city's air quality," Inamdar said.

Asim Sarode, a lawyer fighting cases related noise pollution said, "Many religious and traditional events are adding up to sound pollution. They should be avoided, but people fear to come out openly and oppose it."
