GURUGRAM: In keeping with chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar's vision of planting 10 lakh trees in Gurgaon this monsoon, residents from various colonies braved rain on Sunday morning and initiated drives in their areas.

While RWA of South City I and DLF area planted several saplings in presence of minister Captain Abhimanyu and MLA Umesh Aggarwal, residents of Sushant Lok I planted 104 trees at five locations. "There is a need to not just plant, but adopt trees and raise them properly. We have plans to plant at least 6,000 trees in the DLF area, as air pollution is rising in the city," said Savita Choudhary, President of E-block RWA, DLF Phase I.

"We planted 33 saplings in Sushant Vatika, 28 saplings in Tower Park, 19 in Gulab Park, 9 in Juliet's green patch and 15 in the park behind it. We will not stop till we reach the target of 5,000 trees in Sushant Lok I," said Sudhir Sachdeva, a resident of Sushant Lok I.

While the maintenance agency of Sushant Lok I (Profac) has been deputed to give two hours every morning from 7am to 9am for tree plantation and maintenance, SLRWA (Sushant Lok Residents' Welfare Association) will pay labour charges incurred in the process.

About the importance of tree plantation during monsoon, Vivek Kamboj, a city-based environmentalist, said, "As thousands of trees have been felled to make way for underpasses on national highway, it is important to plant trees. Authorities must also ensure existing forest and green belts in the city are protected."
