New Delhi: Delhi, the national capital, witnessed its hottest day of March in seven years on Thursday, March 23, with the maximum temperature settling at 37.4 degrees Celsius - seven notches above the season's average - according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

“This year's March 23 has broken the last six years' hottest day record. We noted 30 degrees temperature in 2016, 32 in 2015, 2014 and 2013, 27 in 2012 and 34 in 2011,” an official of the IMD said.

Forecasting similar weather the following day, he added that there would be clear sky on Friday with maximum and minimum temperatures to be expected around 37 and 19 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Wednesday's maximum temperature settled at 35.7 degrees Celsius, five degrees above the season's average, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 18.2 degrees Celsius, a notch above the season's average.

Meawhile, NASA scientists have confirmed that February 2017 was the second warmest February in 137 years of modern record-keeping.

Indicating that global warming is unequivocal, the World Meteorological Organisation, in its latest report on the state of the global climate, said that extreme weather and climate conditions have continued in 2017 even as the year 2016 made history, with a record global temperature, exceptionally low sea ice, and unabated sea level rise and ocean heat.
