DEHRADUN: Monitoring of tiger reserves in the country will become much easier, quicker and transparent with the official launch of M-STrIPES (Monitoring System For Tigers-Intensive Protection and Ecological Status) software-enabled mobile app at Corbett Tiger Reserveon Tuesday. Foresters of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are participating in three-day training workshop to learn about data collection and software entry under the guidance of scientists of Wildlife Institute of India at Corbett.

After the successful trial at Panna Tiger Reserve, the app has now been launched in these five states in one go. According to Y V Jhala, WII scientist, "The field staff, while using field protocol of the mobile app, would feed important observation and inputs during patrolling which would provide data about animal mortality, any illegal activity such as poaching, animal population status and trends, habitat status, patrol efforts and human pressure/interference in the area."

The app provides data storage and reports generating tools with which the information fed by forest guards/foresters would reach the control room set up in the tiger reserve and National Tiger Conservation Authority, senior wildlife officials and WII tiger cell. Live information about the sites where patrolling is being done is also captured.

Jhala said M-STrIPES is the software which works on mobile application and is GPS enabled. Guards will have to patrol with this mobile app, and signs of bonfires, snares, tree felling, animal carcass or body parts, etc signifying illegal activities will also be recorded by the field staff with site images, which with other sets of information will reach the software-enabled phones and systems immediately.

Corbett director SurenderMehra said the programme would be successful only if the entire field staff are provided with android smartphones equipped with the app. He said, WII and NTCA would chip in to provide some smartphones. Once this programme is fully operational, it would assist in effective patrolling and protection, wildlife crime control, habitat monitoring and effective management to a great extent.
