In light of the surge in pollution levels in the National Capital Region (NCR) following Diwali, the Gurgaon district administration, as well as schools and offices, have taken measures to curb pollution and protect residents from its adverse effects. Gurgaon District Magistrate, TL Satyaprakash issued an order on Sunday mandating various “precautionary measures” to “address the issue of air pollution”. The order prohibits “open burning of garbage/ waste/ leaves/ plastic material or any such material which causes or is likely to aggravate formation of smog”.

The order further mandates that anyone who notices open burning of such materials can complain to the concerned Station House Officer, Joint Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation Gurugram or the Regional Officer (RO) of the Pollution Control Board. The offender will be liable to pay compensation for the same.

The order further requests the RO of the Haryana State Pollution Control Board to constitute a special task force to monitor and supervise the air

quality in the district.

Schools in Gurgaon have also taken measures to protect students against the concerning pollution levels. While some schools have chosen to remain closed on Monday, others have been making use of air purifiers and encouraging students to wear masks to school.

Several offices, meanwhile, have noted a rise in the number of employees opting to work from home. “We have always offered work from home. But we have noticed a surge in the number of people availing of these options in the last few days because employees are also worried about stepping out in this kind of a situation,” said ManasFuloria, CEO of Nagarro.

In an emergency meeting called by the district administration in Noida on Sunday evening, it was decided that classes will be suspended for lower primary students. “For the other classes, classes will be between 9 am to 1 pm,” said N P Singh, Gautam Budh Nagar district magistrate.

The administration also directed officials to sprinkle water on streets. A campaign to check whether vehicles have Pollution Under Control certificates will also be conducted and these checking centres will be inspected by district officials.
