Poachers kill Kaziranga rhino

JORHAT: Poachers shot dead an adult male rhino near Tunikati anti-poaching camp in the Burapahar forest range of Kaziranga National Park late on Wednesday. Forest officialssaid poachers had fled with the animal's horn and tail before they could reach the spot.

This is the second rhino to be killed in the area in the past 28 days. The first was killed, but not de-horned, on November 16.

Divisional forest officer (Kaziranga) Subhasis Das said, "Wednesday's incident took place at around 10.55 pm. Our staff found some empty shells and the live cartridge of an AK47 rifle from the spot."

He added, "The incident took place near the Moridifolu river, about 1.5 km from the highway inside the park. The poachers managed to escape by crossing the river."

With this, the total number of rhinos killed by poachers in Kaziranga this year has gone up to 17. Tnn
