Correspondent :
At least 10 vehicles piled up on the Yamuna Expressway near Surer around 7 am on Thursday due to low visibility, Mathura police said. “A Maruti Alto was driving slowly due to low visibility when a 12-seater traveller vehicle hit it from behind. Soon after, a UP Roadways bus and a Ford car rammed into them. Then six more vehicles piled up. The first four were damaged badly. Around 10 people received minor injuries,” said G P Singh, SHO, Surer police station, Mathura.

Three women were taken to a hospital in Agra. One of them — a 40-year-old resident of Firozabad — received severe injuries but her condition is stable now, police said. No FIR has been registered so far, police added. Meanwhile, System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) said that PM10 level was recorded at 434 and PM2.5 level crossed 500 in Noida-Greater Noida area on Thursday.

The UP Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) officials in Noida stated that the PM10 level in Gautam Budh Nagar district on Diwali was recorded at 827. “Six days before Diwali, the PM10 level was between 150-200. There was considerable increase in air pollutants after the festival. This is due to a number of factors – change in weather not letting polluted air to escape, lack of wind, etc,” said Brijlal Awasthi, regional officer, UPPCB, Noida.

Senior officials of the Gautam Budh Nagar district administration directed officials of the Noida Authority to take necessary action to tackle the issue of air pollution. “Officials have been directed to ensure that all environmental protocols are followed strictly. The RTO has been instructed to conduct a study on vehicular pollution. We are putting in place a mechanism for tackling the menace,” said N P Singh, DM, Gautam Budh Nagar.
